Both men and women can qualify for the GM title though a separate title, WGM or Women Grandmaster, is also available for women. The Grandmaster title is also given to composers or chess problem solvers who create a mark for themselves.

    Current Regulations

There are certain criteria, which are required to be fulfilled by a chess master to be a GM. Some of them are as follows:

    • To be a Grandmaster, a chess player must have an Elo rating of minimum 2500 at one time.
    • A player usually needs to have 2 winning records in tournaments with other grandmasters, including GMs from other countries.
    • Winning the titles like Women's World Championship, World Junior Championship or World Senior Championship can help the players to get the GM title.

    Title Inflation

The title of Grandmaster has huge prestige and respect associated with it. It represents high level of chess playing all over the world. It is seen that the number of GM in the present time is much higher than it was three decades back. Researches FIDE ratings. This has made it easier for the players to achieve the GM norms. There are also other factors that are counted as the reason for this inflation. The airfare has become immensely cheap which helps chess professional all over the world travel and participate in the tournaments throughout. Experts feel that this posing a negative effect on the seriousness of the title and measures have to be taken to classify it for the chess players who really deserve it.
