Contenders are the chess players who earned the right to compete as challengers for the World Chess Championship but missed it narrowly in the finals. They are equally well known as the World Champions, for their chess skills and style of playing.
The contenders participate in the Candidates’ Tournament, a chess tournament arranged by FIDE. It is the final contest that contenders have to play to be the challenger for the title of World Chess Championship against the reigning champion. Most of these contenders qualify from interzonal tournaments to play at the Candidates’ tournament and then qualify for the World Chess Championship as a challenger.
