Rybka, meaning "little fish" in Czech, is considered to be one of the strongest chess engines. It is the reining champion for the last three World Computer Chess Championships with 50-100 ELO points. It was released for the first time in beta form in the year 2005 on 2nd December.
Rybka is a computer chess program designed by Vasik Rajlich an International Master and Larry Kaufman, a Grandmaster. The other people associated with this program are well known figures in the chess world. Some are chess players and the others are experts. The winner of the 2008 Senior Chess World Championship and a Grandmaster, Larry Kaufman is the person in charge of the evaluation function. Jeroen Noomen, who was also the designer for Rebel, deserves a mention as he along with Dagh Nielsen, one of the famous freestyle chess players are authors of Rybka’s opening book.
Rajlich, the creator of Rybka is a Czech-American citizen who performed brilliantly in his academics all his student life. He graduated from MIT, United States. He is married to Iweta Rajlich, who besides being Vasik Rajlich's wife is also a Grandmaster and primary tester for Rybka.
Features:
Rybka is a closed source program and uses bitboard representation. This gives 60% extra processing efficiency as it’s run in 64-bit mode. It is an alpha-beta searcher having quite a large aspiration window. It supports single processor and symmetric multiprocessing (SMP) systems. However, the current versions of Rybka have multiple processors and its evaluation function is considered one of the best advantages that it has over the rival programs.
