She loves to compete the strongest players in the chess world, not to confine herself as a woman chess player… Maia Chiburdanidze, the Georgian Grandmaster has never been too happy with participating only in the women’s events, as she knows she is no less than the men champions. Chiburdanidze has reasons enough to say that…she is the only player in the history of chess who has won nine Chess Olympiads. Her Elo rating till October 2008 was 2489, which placed her in the 18th rank among all the chess players.
Born in the Georgian Soviet Socialist Republic, USSR, Chiburdanidze started playing chess at the age of 8. Chess players all around the world admire her solid and attacking style of playing. Her performance and position is highly respected in her country. Postage stamps have been designed in her honor to acknowledge her achievements. Mongolia introduced a stamp in the year 1986 which acclaims her performance against Irina Levitina in the World Championship Match 1984. Besides being busy with her career, Chiburdanidze also works for the improvement of chess scenario in her country.
Early Career:
Chiburdanidze style was thoroughly classical which she learnt from her coach Eduard Gufeld, one of the renowned chess trainers in USSR, during her early career. Maia Chiburdanidze’s first major achievement was in the USSR girls' championship in the year 1976. She won the title of International Women’s Grandmaster in the year 1977. Chiburdanidze was declared an outright winner in the Brasov women's international tournament in the year 1974. She won the title of Grandmaster in the year 1984. She entered the Women’s World Chess Championship in the year 1977 by qualifying for the 1977 Candidates matches. She was the most successful player in the Chess Olympiads during the 1980s.
World Chess Championship
Maia Chiburdanidze contented for the title of ‘Women’s World Chess Championship’ in the year 1978. She played it against Nona Gaprindashvili and won it. She defended her title in the year 1981, 1984,1986 and in 1988. Chiburdanidze lost the title to Xie Jun of China in the year 1991.
